FAQs
How long does it take to book my trip?
From initial call to final booking, it takes about a week. Add a few days for special requests—much of business in Iceland is conducted via email and it may take a while for suppliers to reply, particularly during the weekend or on national holidays.
Why is Iceland so expensive?
Iceland is often among the most expensive countries in the world and one of the most expensive in Europe. As an isolated island in the North Atlantic, everything has to be imported, which adds cost. Combined with the high interest in tourism, expect to pay more in Iceland than say, France, Italy, or Japan.
Do I need a visa to visit Iceland?
Those visiting from the U.S. do NOT need a visa. Simply bring your passport and you can travel in Iceland for up to 90 days.
Do I need cash?
Nope! Iceland is, for all purposes, credit card only. You can charge literally anything. There is no need to exchange currency. We recommend a credit card with no foreign transaction fees.
Can I really drive in Iceland?
In Iceland, you’ll drive on the same side of the road as in the U.S. Roads and streets are very similar to any U.S. city. Adhere to the speed limits, because the police will pull you over and give you a ticket, which you are expected to pay immediately. Some roads are not passable in all seasons, but Highway 1, the main highway, is drivable year-round. If you have a destination on a rough road we’ll let you know, but most trips only require driving on smooth pavement.
How much will my trip cost?
An expertly-booked trip will cost from $600 to $800 per person, per day on average. It depends on how many activities are included, class of accommodations, and if any extras (like driver guides) are added.
Will I see the Northern Lights?
In the summer (May through September), the short answer is no. At other times, particularly from December to February, your chances greatly increase—and Iceland is one of the best places to see the magical auroras.
Is Iceland a year-round destination?
Absolutely! Keep in mind that winter will have near-total or total darkness, while summer will have constant daylight. Spring and summer have closer to the usual day and night. As far as temperatures, Iceland can be surprisingly moderate in winter! That said, expect any weather at any time—and pack for all of them. With many layers and a sense of adventure, there is plenty to do in Iceland all year round. And in fact, the shoulder season can be much cheaper than the peak summer months.
What do I pack?
Layers and layers! Iceland can experience all sorts of weather in a short span, so be prepared for anything. If you’re concerned about rain, a rain coat and waterproof boots will be best. Having lots of comfortable layers will keep you traveling happy.
Should I be worried about volcanoes?
The recent seismic activity is mostly confined to a small area in the southwest part of the country. The Blue Lagoon may be affected, but the airport and other activities—for now—are not affected and it is safe to travel to the rest of the country.
