Westman Islands (optional, requires an overnight)

In this itinerary, you’ll hit the major tourist highlights and see some of the most raw, unbelievable nature on the planet. This is the Iceland you see on your Insta feed, in movies, and in most publications. It’s the quintessential trip to Iceland—do it ELITE.

North Coast

Highlights:

Akureyri, Iceland’s “Capital of the North”
Husavik, a charming fishing village with some of the world’s best whale watching
Siglufjordur, northernmost town in Iceland and former herring capital of the world, 25 miles from the Arctic Circle
Lake Myvatn
A stunning black arctic desert
Stuðlagil Canyon
An other-worldly geothermal field with steam plumes and bubbling mud pots
A turf house complex from 1,200 years ago
Endless fjords with historic fishing villages

The less-visited coast, Iceland’s northern region has vast stretches of wilderness that allow you to explore rugged nature, dramatic fjords, and some of the most charming fishing villages you’ll ever see. Just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, the Midnight Sun is truly 24 hours of daylight, while the winter boasts some of the best views of the aurora borealis in the world. The north tends to get more sun as well. If you want to get away from the crowds, head north—do it ELITE.

Full Ring Road

Highlights:

Everything in South Coast and North Coast above, plus…
Iceland’s remote East Coast, including the northeast where wild reindeer live
The stunning Westfjords, one of the most remote parts of Iceland that’s ideal for puffins
The eerie and otherworldly Snaefellsness peninsula
Anything else you want to add!

This is the ultimate Iceland road trip for those who want to see it all. We recommend giving this at least 12 days—and a full 14 days not including travel days if you can. For this itinerary, you’ll self-drive the entire Ring Road (Highway 1) with jaunts to see some of Iceland’s little-visited and most remote locations. See puffins, visit glaciers, and drive right up to dormant volcanoes at your own pace—do it ELITE.
